Today, we’ll take you on a jam-packed ride through 17 of the best St. Louis suburbs and give you the scoop on what it’s like to live in these charming burbs. Each one is drawn from Niche.com’s ranking of the best suburbs in the St. Louis area, and every profile below carries its current Niche rank alongside where it sat in 2024.

How the Best Suburbs of St. Louis Have Moved Since 2023

This list was built on Niche's 2023 ranking, and the numbered profiles below still follow that order. Rather than reshuffle them every year, we leave the order alone and add the new ranking to the table, so what you get is three years of the same suburbs tracked side by side. The movement is usually the interesting part; a single year's placement on its own tells you very little.

Three years in, the movement is bigger than the list itself. Ladue has fallen 16 places, from 5th to 21st. Chesterfield is down 12 and Des Peres down 11.

Going the other way, Olivette has climbed 7, Creve Coeur 5, and Ballwin and Rock Hill 4 each. Brentwood started 4th in 2023 and has held the top spot in both rankings since.

Why the Most Expensive Suburbs Rank Near the Bottom

Here is the thing that surprises people most about this list. Ladue and Town and Country are two of the most expensive suburbs in the region, and on Niche's 2026 ranking they sit at 21st and 22nd. Ladue has fallen 16 places in three years while its home values kept climbing.

That is not a contradiction, it is a scoring decision. Niche weighs cost of living as one of its inputs, so a suburb gets marked down for being expensive no matter how good it is. The ranking is measuring value and accessibility as much as quality, which is why a place like Rock Hill can climb past Ladue without anything changing about either town.

So read the ranking for what it actually measures. If your question is "where do I get the most for my money," it is genuinely useful. If your question is "where are the best homes," the most expensive suburbs list answers that one, and the two lists are close to inverses of each other at the top.

1. Clayton: The Ritzy Rendezvous

One of the most urban parts of St. Louis County is Clayton.

It’s almost like a miniature city of its own in the wealthy mid-county region.

Clayton is a place where the sidewalks are paved with gold, or at least they should be for the taxes you’re paying.

This upscale St. Louis suburb is filled with posh restaurants, swanky boutiques, and folks who drive luxury cars like they’re going out of style.

Living in Clayton is like starring in your own personal episode of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” It’s also the business hub of St. Louis County.

Dozens of companies have major office space in Downtown Clayton across all industries: healthcare, insurance, finance, real estate, banking, you name it.

Clayton scores well on walkability and crime rates are low, its public schools are among the strongest in the state, and Shaw Park gives it real recreational areas in the middle of town. Forest Park and Concordia Seminary are both minutes away, and MetroLink runs straight through.

Clayton is also home to the Centene Centre, a sleek glass tower that was easily the most impressive thing built in Clayton when it opened in 2020, and still one of the tallest buildings outside downtown St. Louis.

Centene had planned a $775 million expansion around it. That project was scrapped, and in November 2025 the company listed two of the vacant Clayton properties it had assembled for it. The tower is still the company headquarters.

Washington University is right next door to Clayton, too.

The neighborhoods in Clayton are a delightful mix of architectural styles, from Tudor revivals to modern mansions.

You’ll see both the historic homes and the newly-built custom ones.

Clayton is a more urban area, but it doesn’t really have “big city” vibes.

Forest Hills is a beautiful country club that draws people to the area for its golf and social membership options. It also tends to have a younger membership compared to some of the old-money style country clubs in Ladue and Town & Country.

Clarkson Valley’s neighborhoods are full of luxurious estates, custom-built homes, and private lots. Its real estate market caters to those looking for elegance and sophistication in a serene suburban setting.

15. Creve Coeur: The Healthcare Haven

That’s because Creve Coeur has a sort of downtown area all along Olive Blvd toward the north… But “Downtown Creve Coeur” isn’t a thing unlike Downtown Clayton or Downtown Kirkwood.

Creve Coeur’s neighborhoods offer a diverse range of housing options, from well-kept single-family homes to gated villa communities and condo complexes.

Many communities in Creve Coeur are centered around picturesque lakes, parks, and golf courses, giving residents an enjoyable suburban lifestyle.

It’s not just one of the best suburbs of St. Louis; it’s one of the most central. Creve Coeur is right at the intersection of I-270 and I-64/40. This gives easy access to the city limits if you’re traveling to Downtown St. Louis for work or a ball game.

Creve Coeur is home to a thriving business district with numerous medical facilities, research centers, and office parks that attract healthcare professionals and other skilled workers.

And similarly to Olivette, some parts of Creve Coeur are within the Ladue School District and sometimes offer pricing that’s better than Ladue. Conversely, Ladue can be an area where you don’t always get as much bang for your buck with housing.

16. Town and Country: Upscale Country Charm

Imagine country living in the heart of St. Louis County. That’s Town and Country in a nutshell. Faust Park sits on its western edge, and its median home value and median household income both sit near the top of the region.

Despite the name, Town and Country isn’t as “country” as it once was.

It used to be full of big parcels of land, equestrian estates, and beautiful homes with plenty of acreage and privacy.

You still see big homes, often on 1-3 acre lots, but it has a more suburban feel and less country.

You’ll find a delightful blend of beautiful custom homes on larger properties, picturesque horse pastures, and a quaint town center.

T&C is a gorgeous community, but it ain’t cheap. In fact, it’s one of the most expensive places to live aside from Ladue, Frontenac, and Huntleigh.

17. Grantwood Village: The Little Neighbor of Grant’s Farm

Niche rank: #9 best suburb in the St. Louis area for 2026, and it was outside the top 25 in 2024.

Grantwood Village is the biggest surprise on this year’s list, and it is far and away the smallest place on it. Around 1,000 people live here across roughly 345 homes, which means the entire municipality is smaller than a single subdivision in some of the other suburbs we have covered.

The landmark you already know is Grant’s Farm. It takes up about half of the village’s land area, so the whole western side of town is essentially one of the most visited attractions in the region. Living here means having that as your neighbor.

Homes are mostly 1950s and 1960s builds, and the village feeds into the Lindbergh school district, the same district serving Sunset Hills, Crestwood, Concord and parts of Fenton.

Zillow puts the typical single-family home value in Grantwood Village at $605,138 as of July 2026, up 7.2% from $564,471 a year earlier.

It is also the only South County entry in Niche’s 2026 top 10. If you want to be closer to the city than West County allows without paying West County prices, this pocket is worth a look, though with so few homes you should expect to wait for one to come up.

Moving to the Suburbs of St. Louis, MO

Where you work usually decides which of these you pick. Anheuser-Busch InBev, BJC Healthcare, Build-A-Bear Workshop and Pfizer all have a large presence in the metro, and the commute from West County looks very different from the commute out of Webster or Brentwood.

Wherever you land, you are close to the things that make this a good place to live: the Gateway Arch, and Forest Park with the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Science Center, all free. The Delmar Loop is a few minutes north of Clayton.

Plenty of good places did not make Niche's top 17 and are still worth a look, including Maryland Heights, Florissant, Overland, Affton and its own Affton School District, Sappington, Holly Hills and Fenton. Some buyers also cross into Illinois for the Metro East, though everything on this list sits west of the Mississippi.
