Where to Live in St. Louis

A buyer’s guide to the parts of the region, written for people who have not lived here. Work out which part fits before you start looking at houses, because almost everything that decides your day, the drive, the taxes, the schools, is set by that choice and not by the house.

City vs. County

This catches almost everyone. The City of St. Louis is an independent city. It is not part of St. Louis County, has not been since 1876, and runs its own government, police and school district. When someone says they live in St. Louis, the first useful question is which one they mean.

The City is 79 named neighborhoods in its own right. If that is the part you are trying to picture, we have a labeled map of all 79 city neighborhoods you can zoom into.

St. Louis County is not one place either. It is dozens of separate municipalities, each with its own city hall and tax rate, inside a patchwork of school districts that do not follow city lines. West across the Missouri River is St. Charles County, where most of the region’s new construction has gone for twenty years.

Why this matters before you tour a single house: price, taxes, school district and commute all change at these lines, and none of them are visible in a listing photo.

Map of the greater St. Louis region: St. Charles County north-west across the Missouri River, St. Louis County wrapping the centre, and the City of St. Louis as a separate area on the Mississippi, inside the wider metro that reaches into Illinois
  • Greater St. Louis region — both sides of the river, about an hour out.
  • St. Charles County — the growth side, and most of the new construction.
  • St. Louis County — dozens of separate municipalities. Not the City.
  • St. Louis City — its own county, independent since 1876.

The Whole Region, in One Video

Jacob drives and maps the entire metro: the highways you will actually commute on, then every part of the region in turn, with what homes cost in each. It runs long because the region is big.
