If you’re on the hunt for a top-notch high school for your kiddo in St. Charles County, you’ve come to the right place.
We understand that finding the perfect school can be a daunting task. We’ve got you covered.
We put together a list of the top 10 high schools in St. Charles County. Let’s talk about what they all have to offer.
How St. Charles County High Schools Rank in 2026
Two things are worth saying plainly before the list. Our original 2023 version ranked these schools on our own judgement, without pointing to any published ranking, and it stayed in that order for three years. From 2026 the order follows Niche’s ranking of public high schools in St. Charles County, so you can check it against the source yourself. The last column below shows how each school moved against our old list, and that column is a comparison with our own pick, not with a previous year’s ranking.
2026 is year one of this record. We would rather show you a decade of movement, and we cannot: Niche does not publish an archive of its county rankings, and no earlier edition of this particular list was captured anywhere we can cite. So there is genuinely no prior year to put beside 2026. From here we add a column every year rather than overwriting the old one, which means this page gets more useful the longer it runs.
Because two respected sources can look at the same ten schools and disagree, both are shown side by side. Niche weighs state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, teacher quality and reviews from students and parents. U.S. News leans harder on college readiness and Advanced Placement performance, and it ranks against the whole state rather than the county. Neither one is the answer on its own, and where they disagree the gap usually tells you something real about a school.

The headline is that Francis Howell North has dropped out of the top ten, from our sixth pick to Niche’s twelfth, and North Point has arrived at tenth having not existed as a graduating school when we first wrote this. Fort Zumwalt South made the biggest climb inside the ten. And the two rankings pull hardest in opposite directions on Holt, which Niche places eighth in the county while U.S. News has it sixtieth in Missouri, and on Francis Howell, which Niche ranks third while U.S. News rates it the strongest school in the county on college readiness.

Liberty High is one of 4 schools in the Wentzville R-IV school system. It’s the 2nd newest school in the district, opened in 2008. If you’re wondering what the newest is, it’s North Point High, which opened in 2021.
Wentzville R-IV is a rapidly growing school district, and it’s one of the reasons so many people are moving to Wentzville these days.
Liberty is located on Sommers Road in Lake St. Louis just south of the lake and right next to the Shoppes at Hawk Ridge. Liberty offers a tight-knit, supportive atmosphere for students.

Another top school within Wentzville R-IV. Timberland is a phenomenal choice for students in the Wentzville area.
At Timberland, you can expect a well-rounded education that balances rigorous academics with engaging extracurriculars. This school has an exceptional music program and a strong commitment to community service.

They focus on exposing students to the professional culture, problem-solving, and technology. It’s also a great experience to add to the college resume.
They have a great debate team and an award-winning football team, too! Let’s hear it for the Timberland Wolves!
6. Fort Zumwalt South High School
2026 rankings: #6 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded A minus. U.S. News is far more enthusiastic, ranking it 12th in Missouri and second only to Francis Howell in the county on college readiness. Its 92% graduation rate is the lowest here, which is part of why the two rankings differ.
Just a few miles south of Ft. Zumwalt North, Ft. Zumwalt South is in St. Peters. This school runs a strong academic program and a variety of clubs and activities to keep students engaged.
From their competitive Bulldogs sports teams to their highly-regarded theater program, Fort Zumwalt South covers a lot of ground.
7. Fort Zumwalt North High School
2026 rankings: #7 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded A minus, and unmoved from our 2023 list. Its 97% graduation rate is second highest on this page, though U.S. News ranks it 34th in Missouri.
Fort Zumwalt North, aka North high school, is in the northern part of O’Fallon. They are known for their strong commitment to academic excellence and extracurricular opportunities.
Ft. Zumwalt North has a strong sense of community. Their Panther pride makes it a welcoming place for students to learn and grow.
The Fort Zumwalt district also features the A+ Scholarship Program, which provides financial assistance for students attending 2-year Missouri community colleges or vocational schools.
8. Holt High School
2026 rankings: #8 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded A minus, where it is listed under its full name, Emil E. Holt Senior High School. This is where the two sources disagree most: U.S. News ranks it 60th in Missouri, the lowest of any school here, while its 7 to 1 student-teacher ratio is the smallest in the county.

Holt is one of the oldest high schools in Missouri, and it’s just steps away from Wentzville’s historic district.
Holt offers AP coursework and a STEM pathway, and its small size shows up in the numbers: a 7 to 1 student-teacher ratio, the lowest in the county. The trade-off is visible in the other direction, though. Its U.S. News college-readiness score of 17.9 is the lowest of the schools on this page, which is a measure of AP participation and results rather than of teaching, but it is worth knowing if Advanced Placement is what you are shopping for.
They also have a thriving arts program, including an outstanding music department that has earned top honors at competitions.
With an array of clubs, activities, and sports, the Holt Indians always have something exciting happening on campus.
9. Fort Zumwalt East High School
2026 rankings: #9 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded A minus. U.S. News places it 44th in Missouri, with a 94% graduation rate.
Fort Zumwalt East, located in St. Peters, is the fourth Fort Zumwalt school to make this list.
This school is dedicated to providing a well-rounded education and offers a variety of academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs to cater to every student’s interests.
The Fort Zumwalt East Lions take pride in their strong sense of community and commitment to excellence.
10. North Point High School
2026 rankings: #10 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded A minus. U.S. News ranks it 45th in Missouri, with a 96% graduation rate.

North Point is the newest high school in St. Charles County and the newest of the four in Wentzville R-IV, having opened in 2021. It was not on our original list for the simple reason that it had not yet graduated a class when we wrote it.
It has arrived quickly. A 9 to 1 student-teacher ratio is among the lowest in the county, and its 96% graduation rate already sits above several longer-established schools here.
Being a new building, North Point drew families from Liberty and Timberland attendance areas as Wentzville kept growing, which is worth understanding if you’re house hunting in that part of the county. Boundaries in a fast-growing district move more often than in a settled one, so confirm the attendance area for a specific address rather than assuming it from the neighborhood.

Francis Howell North High School
2026 rankings: #12 in St. Charles County on Niche, graded B plus, down from the sixth spot on our 2023 list. U.S. News is kinder, ranking it 35th in Missouri, ahead of both Timberland and Fort Zumwalt East, with a 94% graduation rate.
Francis Howell North sits just outside the top ten this year, and we have kept it here because a school falling a few places on one ranking is not the same as a school going downhill. The two sources disagree about it more than about almost any other school in the county, and it remains one of the larger schools here at 1,716 students.
Located in the middle of St. Charles, Francis Howell North offers an inclusive environment where students can excel academically and personally.
They offer a wide range of courses, dedicated teachers, and a strong focus on technology.
Francis Howell North is known for its award-winning journalism program and a highly competitive speech and debate team.
And when it comes to athletics, the Knights are always ready to bring home a win.
Choosing the Right School
Each school offers a unique blend of academics, extracurriculars, and community spirit, making them all fantastic options for your student.
Rankings are a starting point, not a verdict. The two used here disagree on where nearly every school belongs, and neither of them can tell you whether your kid will find their people in the theater department or on the wrestling team.
So schedule some school tours, talk to teachers and administrators, and most importantly, listen to your gut on what feels right.
